Here is another typical Paris scene! We often call the bar that can be found in cafés, "Le zinc", after the name of the metallic chemical element (even though, and I'm sure it will be a surprise to all my French readers, I found out that no bars have ever been made out of Zinc!). The little red and white napkin under the glasses is also very French: the red and white motive (which can also be green or blue) is called "Le Vichy" because it was originally made in Vichy (in the South center of France) - It was Brigitte Bardot who made it famous when she got married in a Vichy style dress in 1959!
August 26, the holiday season is almost over, people have started coming back to work, there goes my tranquility at the office! Traffic has gotten worse too... But it's probably nothing compared to next Monday ;) Anyway the press conference season will also start soon, so here is one photo I took at the occasion of the launch of new products. They rented a loft for the occasion and I thought the setting of the room would make a good photo - taken from above (I took it at the end of the conference, when they started clearing the room). It's not a black and white photo, although it may look like one...
I heard the news on the radio this morning: "farmers are selling their products to Parisians on an improvised market on Place de la Bastille". I went there, thinking this was definitely photo worthy. And apparently I was not the only one to hear the news on the radio! There were several hundreds of people waiting in line to buy fruit and vegetables at a supposedly better price. In fact, I did not really see the difference (actually melons are even presently less expensive in the shop around the corner than there - 1,65 € against 2 €...)
As you may or may not be aware, Barack Obama is winning over hearts and minds in Europe. I'm sure you'll have something to say about that, but Iwanted to mostly share this interesting piece of graffiti I found along the Seine at the Port autonome de Paris (11th arrondissement). I recently heard an American comedian (John Stewart) mock the implication by others that a black man on the U.S. currency would be quite difficult for the public to handle. His reply, "Why? Because he's green?" Anyway, here's an interesting link about the subject that you might like.
If you wander around in Paris and see the word Amour painted on the pavement or on some shop window, it's very likely that this man - Jean-Luc Duez - did it! Jean-Luc started doing this after a love story that did not end too well... But he claims it's not the only reason. To him, writing Amour everywhere is also his own way of acting for peace in the world (he actually started doing this after 9/11). And it works! He told me that he met 3 people that wanted to commit suicide and did not because they saw one of his signs. Amazing! Check here to see more Amour! About 20 people will attend this year's PDP Picnic on May 7, why don't you join? Please check this topic in the PDP Forum.
Sad but true. Because of the current world food crisis, the price of staple goods is going up. This impacts primarily developing countries of course, but not only. People in rich countries with just enough to live on are more and more impacted. And consequently NGOs that help them face an increasing demand for food. In France, the Red Cross had planned to serve 32 million meals in 2008 (vs 30 million in 2007), but the President of the Red Cross was in all the media today saying that, with their current funds, they will only be able to serve 27 million meals. BTW, this torso belongs to someone famous on PDP, can you guess?
I'm just back from a nice evening with fellow bloggers (no, not from the City Daily Photo community, but French bloggers) organized by Laurence, a Belgium girl of Korean origins, who lives in Paris. It's always nice to see for real people which life you follow through all these gadgets such as Facebook, Twitter, Pownce, Seesmic, Friendfeed... you name them (yes, I am a geek, I confess!). We gathered at Le China (Ex Le China Club) a very nice place, beautifully decorated that just reopened (located near Bastille, on 50 rue de Charenton). I do recommend it if you're looking for a quiet and cosy place to have dinner or a drink - and if you're comfortable having Chinese food while in Paris!
It's been a while since I have posted a demonstration photo. Well, since the season has reopen, here you go! Guess who is "en colère" (angry) at the moment ? The high school pupils. They marched today between Republique and Nation using pretty festive slogans mocking Sarkozy and the Education Minister. Somes things will never change... Here are some more photos.
On Saturday, I was on the Place de la Bastille when I suddenly heard "noise" (OK, music!) coming from the steps of the Opera. Nothing like a bel canto aria, but... something that sounded more like rap. You know me... I grabbed my camera and started shooting. It looked more like the set of a video clip to me than an actual performance, but what I can tell you for sure is that the refrain went "trop vénère" which means "Très énervé" (very upset/angry) in slang. I'll let you know if this band becomes famous. PS: before you ask, the blurry effect is 100% natural!
The weather is still pretty nice in Paris and despite the unstable economical situation, people still go shopping, like this lady. Not sure she'll go for the sexy outfit though... Have a nice Sunday everyone. It's a voting day for us.
No, I did not dig out an old photo from a trip to Mexico(!), I took it right in the middle of Paris, in the backyard of the house where I took this photo. Not much to say, I just thought this scene was quite unexpected ;)
We're currently experiencing one of the hottest winter since 1950 (1,1 °c above the average temperature since the beginning of winter). It's not only warm, but also very sunny: the sun shone almost 300 hours between December and February (against 187 hours over the same period on average between 1991 and 2000). Consequently cafés and restaurants have reopened their terraces and Parisians are already having lunch outside (I did last Saturday!) ! It's a moment I love - and I'm sure you do too ;)
I don't know if you remember this photo that I took about a year ago. I went back to the same street today and found out that this amazing building, built in 1891, is falling apart. Mind you, looking at the old photo I could have seen it coming, for there were several cracks on the wall already! Anyway, nice and sunny day in Paris, I had a nice time walking around the Bastille area.I hope you have nice Sunday everyone, wherever you are in the world!
Time flies... It's the first of the month again. As you must all know now it's a theme day! And today's theme is: mural or graffiti. So here you go; a mural I've been willing to show you for a long time, simply because I like it. BTW, if you wonder how theme days are decided, it's very simple : we have a "voting booth" on the portal - under the high surveillance of Jenny from Sharon Daily Photo!- and we get to vote every month. Who knows, one day, we might make this vote available to every visitor... Almost 150 City Daily Photo blogs participate in this theme day today. Time for you to (re)discover our new portal. You may also visit each blog individually, but please bear in mind that we're all on different time zones! There is a permanent circus in Paris. It's called Le cirque Bouglione - Bouglione is a famous family that runs several circuses in France - and it's located in Le cirque d'hiver (winter circus) a place that was originally built in 1852 (read the whole history here). They just started a brand new show, so the place is crowded. Who said the circus is dead?! Check their web site and pay them a visit, it's really worth it ;)
There are two three(*) bridges that are used by the metro in Paris. The Bir Hakeim one (that I already showed here) that is used by line 6, and this one, called Passerelle d'Austerlitz, used by line 5. The reason why these two lines cross the Seine on a bridge is that they were built before 1910 when architects were still reluctant to build train tunnels underneath water! (*) Update: a dedicated visitor emailed me to let me know I forgot the Pont de Bercy! He is right, and I should have thought of it, because, of course, I already photographed it here and here!
We all know what's going on in Myanmar and, even though I know a photo on PDP won't help, I thought I could use this one to contribute to the current buzz about this country. Frankly I don't know where these monks are from, but I found it "funny" to come across them near La Bastille. I would also like to take advantage of this post to report this blog - it's not Myanmar Daily Photo, but I wish it were...
I could have shown you the beautiful house that stands at this number, but on a second thought, I found that this was more beautiful and intriguing. It actually looks like this photo was taken in Provence, in the South of France whereas I took it in the 11th arrondissement, boulevard Richard Lenoir. Apparently it shelters the office of and architect and an interior designer; lucky them. Have a nice weekend everyone, and don't forget, on October 1st a new theme day is coming up!
You all remember Velib right? This new bike rental system that allows Parisians - and tourists - to pick up a bike from any of numerous stations spread out through the city. Well, yesterday, to make fun of all this and to get attention, someone (Sébastien Brochot) inaugurated the first Pielib station. Pielib is a play on word with Pied (foot in French) as Velib is also a play on word with Velo (bike in French). As you can see on the making of Pielib offers a "rental shoes service" and strangely use the exact same stations as Velib, LOL!
