Le Palace was a mythical place when I was young. It was the equivalent to what Studio 54 was in New York in the 80's 70's: the club to be! It was closed in 1983 after its owner died and did not really reopened until a few days ago, after it's been turned into a theater again (see more of its history here). I'm also happy to post this photo today because it brings me back to when I started PDP with my little Sony compact camera: I posted a photo of Le Palace on April 8, 2005 ending the caption with " Nobody knows what the Palace is going to become." Now I know! Time flies and PDP has already a history!
A few years ago if you wanted to see a musical in Europe you had to go to London, period. Things have changed! Now you can see a lot of interesting productions in one of our many theaters. That's precisely what I did last night when I went to Mogador to see Le Roi Lion (The Lion King). I must say, I'm not a big fan of these shows, but this one really made me change my opinion. The costumes are stunning - I'm talking stunning! - the scenery is breathtaking and the French adaptation is really well made. Nice way to start my weekend ;) Here is a little clip.
I'm just back from a dinner at Les Paparazzi, a very nice Italian restaurant located near the opera, in a little passage sheltered from the noise of the street (which is unexpected in this area). Next to this restaurant I found this superb - and very famous - theater called L'Athénée-Louis Jouvet (Louis Jouvet was a beloved actor during the first half of the 20th century). It was built before 1900 but it was renewed and 1996 and is now part of the French Historical Monuments which means it cannot be destroyed nor altered.
Last night, on my way back home from the office, I passed by the rue de la Gaité a pretty "festive" street in the area of Montparnasse. I noticed a huge line at the entrance of "Bobino" one of the mythical music halls of Paris. The name Bobino is known to all Parisians but to be quite honest I thought it was now more or less closed. Browsing the web to know more, I found out that the place had been totally redone in 2007 and that they turned it into a Cabaret kinda place (like the Moulin Rouge or Le Lido) where you can enjoy fancy costumes and music. You'll find out more on their website. BTW, talking about music, here is a little piece that Vivky Hugo (a regular commenter) sent me today. Quite unexpected... If you want to attend this year's PDP Picnic on May 7, please check this topic.
Not far from the Beaubourg Center, there is a nice little theater called " Le théâtre du Renard" (the Fox Theater), which is not very well known even though it is very pretty inside. Its name comes from the name of a street where it's located, la rue du Renard which used to be a prostitution area under Louis the 9th (in the middle ages).
Hey, guess what? Today is the 1st of the month and, yes, the theme day has returned! I chose the Bir Hakeim bridge that you have already seen on this blog from another angle. It's a very interesting bridge because it's got two stories: one for cars (built in 1878) and one for the metro (built in 1905). The top part - used by metros - is a real work of art even though some ornaments have disappeared during a renewal work in the 1940s. Recently, they added a bicycle lane. More than a 120 City Daily Photo blogs are currently participating in this theme day. Please pay them a visit, but remember that they don't all post at the same time .
